The History of Bendigo

Bendigo has a history of being one of the richest producers of gold in the world, yielding over 750 ton between 1851 and 1954. The area was known as Sandhurst until 1891, but always unofficially as Bendigo. In Christmas in 1851, there were 800 people on the Bendigo field, and in June, there were 20,000 diggers that arrived. It's nicknamed for English Ben Knuckle Prize fighter, William Abendigo Thompson while William Bendigo Thompson.
