Use of Run-in Periods in Randomized Trials With Dr Armitage
JAMAevidence JAMA Guide to Statistics and Methods
Intention to Treat
Armatage: To whom does the treatment effect obtained from a trial that uses a run-in period actually apply? When I practice as a clinician and I make a decision to recommend one therapy over another, I don't know at that point whether that individual patient would have survived. If you think about your clinical practice and you prescribe that particular medication for your participant and they come back two months later and say, Doctor, I can't take this medicine, it just doesn't agree with me, then you're not going to pursue it. That's sort of an important point to understand.
