I have, through all my life, really been a disciple of william james. He wrote a book called the varieties of religious experience. I was always fascinated by his approach to this problem. It involved a way in which we might understand the dynamics of various different accounts of people's visions of god. Sometimes these visions might sound very different. And other people wanted to experiencegod as something completely inside - that is the essence of what you really call yourself.
