Fuller understood that the success at Cambrai was just a glimpse of what might be possible. The British High Command did not. There are several explanations for these missed opportunities, but most of us don't get past the first and most obvious. People are idiots. So remarked one senior officer to Fuller at the end of the First World War: "Now we can get back to some real soldiering"
