Greta Gerwig is married to Noah Baumbach, who wrote the film. The movie has a little bit of development behind it and it probably even predates the stuff on the net. It's almost like the one Barbie that doesn't fit in goes to the real world to figure out her story. Amy Schumer's story was supposed to be like that.
