Aristotle argues that plants exist for the sake of animals. Medieval philosophers also believe it is okay to use animals in order to sustain one's life. But occasionally they argue that there are some kind of limits to this use of animals. Namely, you may use animals inorder to sustain your life, but you may not use them more than is sufficient for sustaining your life.
