Action Sequences - Suspense Versus Surprise
Set up the characters in internal conflict first. This is what makes action sequences meaningful, because there has to be that central point of emotion. Anchor us with one or two characters in a big fight scene and keep the fight intimate,. Otherwise we'd feel more detached from it, we don't care as much. And last but not least, it's not about what is happening, but who it's happening to. That's what we really care about, and that's what makes action intense.
