The Metaphor of a Tool
The way I presented Wittgenstein was rather less sophisticated than you actually find it attractive. There's a kind of inchoate signal that you get simply by having those things. That was something that he thought in his earlier work. To some extent he didn't entirely abandon that picture of philosophy later on, but I do think later on he adopted a much more piecemeal approach towards thinking about language. But ultimately we do better to understand it as an instrumental tool and not as a more or less opaque medium.
