The effects of towing on marine mammals can be acute or chronic. A whale, for example, could die within minutes just because they're simply trapped in a net. Or over the course of months and years, dies slow awful, more awful deaths. The effect is that you have basically what amounts to an extra appendage, a ghost net dragging from you.
