In the early 1970s, methadone was getting a lot of support at the highest levels of government with Nixon's war on drugs. In 1971, there were about 9,000 patients on methadone maintenance. By 1973, two years later, that number had grown to 73,000. Critics were calling Jerome Jaffe the methadone king.
