i think the great irony is that jefferson wanted constitutions to be thrown out and replaced every generation. And it comes from a wish for a more coherent and unified vision of society. The concept was useful in making arguments about contending visions of american society, but obviously there was a fundamental weakness. They were simply two contending forces who fought and competed with one another.
