Dr. Laidley would travel with him for a day before returning to his home in Pizania. The first kingdom that Park entered was called Wully, and the first city he came into contact with was Medina. He estimated that three quarters of the population were slaves; slavery was common in much of West Africa. Even those who accepted Islam, the Bushering, often mixed the religion with local beliefs.
