CHAPTER

The Trial of a Countess in France in 1725

In 1725, a French innkeeper found the body of his wife in their kitchen. Her legs were still wearing stockings and she wasn't known to be a heavy drinker. The husband was charged with her murder but he protested it as an act of God. A traveling surgeon told the court that there were many documented examples of unexplainable burnings like this. He said they should let John Mier off the hook thanks to him being gullible.
