Gettysburg's own citizens were justly proud of an impressive total of 15 cart wagon and carriage industries, 148 schoolhouses, 75 churches. There was no army department that was really in charge of finding, locating, categorizing the dead. Many battles had the dead buried by the freedmen, the freed slaves who accompanied Union armies.
