Ruth Asawa's Biomorphic Skulls

Ruth Asawa was brought up on a farm in California by immigrant Japanese parents. During the 1930s, more than 100,000 Japanese Americans were placed in internment camps across the US. She set out to earn a teaching degree from Milwaukee State Teachers College but was denied due to racial discrimination. Inspired by trip to Mexico she began her repetitive loot, wiring technique. Her larger cell and cocoon-like wire sculptures simultaneously emanate strength and fragility.
