Dopamine has often got popular press for being the reward chemical. But it's oversimplifying what dopamine is doing in the brain, says Andrew Keen. What we think dopamine is doing is signaling some kind of error on our predictions of what the world is going to be like. And this was shown in really amazing experiments by a neuroscientist called Wolfram Schultz. He recorded from dopamine neurons and showed they showed this prediction error like signal.
