The Prognosis of Brain Abscesses

Operative approach involves aspiration which is typically done with CT guidance or excision. Excision of the abscess cavity may be useful when it is located in a periventricular or posterior fossa distribution is lockulated or contains a foreign body. Triple therapy with vancomycin, ceftriaxone and metronitazole is typically initiated at diagnosis. A brain abscess from a contiguous focus of infection and those developing after a traumatic injury tend to have the best prognosis.
