Lincoln was trying to figure out a way, a legal way, a constitutional way to eradicate slavery. He said the Constitution did not give him the power to do except as a war war act. The debates between Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas are some of the most remarkable documents in American history. They would speak for an hour or the first speaker would speak forAn hour and a half. Each event anyway about four or five hours.
