The Lion Gazelle - Is the Amygdala a Threat Detector?
The lion and the gazelle have a very different sense of total worst case scenario threat projection. The xifoid nucleus, as I mentioned earlier, connects to the amygdala, which is a threat detection center. And it projects to the forebrain areas, the brain evolved in cognitive processing such as the prefrontal cortex. Lindsay did a beautiful set of experiments in which she could tease out which of these pathways when activated could actually trigger the animal towards a reduced fear response and increased courage.
