CHAPTER

Mozart's Inexhaustible Invention

The recapitulation of a movement is usually very similar to the exposition, but Mozart's invention in this symphony is inexhaustible. Any one of the motives, themes and ideas that came out of this movement would be enough to sustain an entire piece. Interestingly and rarely for Mozart, he writes a second repeat at the end of the movement. This would mean going all the way back to the beginning of the development and playing the entire second half of the movement again. As I said earlier, this would make the movement almost 16 minutes long.
