The Kingdom of Judah in the South

There was a ruling dynasty, ruling house, in that region that had been founded by a king called david. But this then fell to rebellion and eventually split into northern and southern kingdoms. The common word jew comes from the surviving kingdom of judah which was centred on jerusalem. A these two kingdoms weakened, and they were not able to effectively maintain their independence. They were eventually forced into a vassal type relationship with the assyrians. This is the time under josiah when the ten commandments are first put forward. And it's used as the basis to justify distinctive jewish customs like sabbath.
