Athens and the Long Walls

Athens proper is situated in the middle of a wide plain about thre and a half miles, or six kilometers, from its main port. After the persian wars some two generations ago, the athenian state spent enormous amounts of money and time building a set of walls that formed a fortified passageway connecting the city proper to the port of piraeus. For many greeks, they were a symbol of athenian imperialism and hubris.
