The Role of Feeling in Survival

No mechanistic explanation of any cognitive function will explain in advance why it feels like something. That does not apply to an affective function like feeling, he says. There's no point of having a feeling if you don't feel it. So the prevention of dying is pretty causally consequential as far as living things are concerned - that's what feeling does.
