When he was in his third year at Kings, John Martin taught him quantum mechanics. He then went on to teach a course on general relativity for the first time. At this point they said you go and do a PhD - so he looked up where that could be done. It turned out to be Newcastle with Paul Davis who is still very active. And I knew nothing about it but thoughtI could see it was bringing these things together. So I applied and he invited me up for interview.
