Introduction

The final exhibit in the Field Museum of Natural History attempts to capture the grandeur of our current chapter. Darwin's words occupy its center says from so simple of beginning endless forms most beautiful and wonderful have been and are being provoked. The possession of this common ancestry is a mark that distinguishes every living organism on our planet from what is bereft of life. But despite its immense explanatory power the discovery of this evolutionary nexus does not answer our question. Freedom of its membership correctly delimits all known living organisms but it doesn't explain why. This talk is brought to you by the Thomistic Institute.
