The First Step of Drug Discovery

The first step of drug discovery is to identify a target. Usually it costs billions of dollars for Alzheimer's, tens of billions of dollars and for some cancers,. And then it fails 95 to 99% of the time. So one to 5% success rate, pretty substantial probability of failure. It can take a decades. After this, after you've identified the target and validated it in some preclinical models, so you need to have some mice or some human tissue with the disease to be able to test your hypothesis before moving further.
