It's really that generation, a born in the 18 forties, that comes of age in a moment where they can expect to have a sta scientific career. That was an opportunity that previous generations generally didn't have available to them. And so members of this older generation were very accustomed to having to build their careers in whatever way that they could. They usually looked to very diverse sources of income.
