How Do Virtues Come From God?

Doctor pryor says that virtue must be practised. It must become a habit in order to attain excellence. What role do works play? Should they be disregarded? Are any works just an attempt to earn my way to god? And then what about these virtues? Do they come from god and i manage them? Or how? How does all this work?
