The Effect of Environment on Politicians' Behavior
Is it inherently a bad thing for politicians to be different from the people they represent? I think that's, you know, that's a really normative question with probably lots of subjective responses. My research adds to our understanding of the UK Parliament as a non-descriptive legislature. Politicians are not only physically and culturally unrepresentative of the nation, but also psychologically unrepresentative. Our current political environment is much more geared towards activating the self-enhancing aspects of politicians' personalities than their better characteristics.
