Joseph Smith Sr. published his claim as part of an 1836 Ohio treasure quest, claiming to be talking to Moroni. Jesse Smith's letter suggests he was a river god who possessed a magical rod. Notice here that these rods don't just heal people and they're not just used possibly to avenge Joseph Smith and Hiram Smith's death but also they appear to be means of ascertaining the divine will.
