In 1916, anthropologist Saxton Pope sent Ishi's brain to the Smithsonian. The day after Grover sent that letter, Ishi died and then Pope had an autopsy performed. But before they did, they removed his brain and they preserved it. When Grover returned from his sabbatical, it was waiting for him, like a sick taunt.
