My 25 Favorite Moments in Classical Music (Part 2)
Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast
I Am Lost to the World by Mahler
The first moment is from his second symphony in the first movement. Mahler builds up to this moment with huge waves of violence, writing music that was unprecedented at its time and its fury and rage. But then he stops all this motion on a horror chord, an A diminished seventh chord. And this chord seems to break open the whole world before our eyes. I always like to compare this moment to a musical black hole, with so much mass and power that it destroys everything in sight.
