Joan's Retraction
In May of 1431, a year after her capture, Joan is brought before a court to hear her formal charges. In her weakened state, before the scaffold meant to kill her, Joan complies. They get her to sign a confession. She doesn't know what it says. And she signs it with the axe. The guards take the dress away, and return the men's clothing to her. Her choice in the morning: Get up and go out there naked in front of all these people, or put on the clothes that they are there.
