Why Leaders Need to Pay Close Attention to Negative Emotions

When negative emotions rise, so do interest in populist parties. If you're feeling a lot of emotional pain, whether it's sadness or loneliness, then your emotional regulation goes down and you just want the pain to go away. So these are fundamental human needs that I think oftentimes are overlooked for some kind of macro level issues that leaders are talking about.
