Is There a Cultural Gap Between the French and the Americans?

As a kid brought home a young man with me to my father's delight. He didn't speak any English when he got here and really just plunged right in. The French must look at Americans, the French who are not necessarily broad-minded or cosmopolitan, and they would just go, suckle bleh. And then Americans look at the French and they go, you know, ooh la nonsense.
