In 1633, the Ottoman Sultan Marad IV cracked down on coffee because he believed it was provoking social decay and disunity in Istanbul. Gabby Gifford: While alcohol left people drunk and inept, coffee made them energized, alert and imaginative. She says that's why they took a crack at suppressing this black brew.
