It might not have f felt as oppressive in their methods, but it was actually a longer,. a wider and a deeper rule than the babylonian rule. Instead of being physically persecuted and militarily dominated, they found themselves being enticed into a system that controls a trolled them from the inside out. And so instead of being robbed of your material possessions, you are robbed of your identity as partners of god. I would assume that we could relate to this.
