Rutherford b hayes was elected president in 18 76 under a cloud of controversy. His wife, lucy Hayes, became the first presidential wife to graduate college. She used her platform to advocate for personal political causes including temperance and women's education. Her visibility emboldened the burgeing prohibition movement which would grow to a king making role in democratic politics.
