Can we draw anything more broadly about the relationship between civilians and insurgents? Across the globe, from afghanistan, all their lessons that we can learn t thed apply elsewhere. I'm tempted to say yes and no and give you a really muddled answer, but with that coffee out ofit's i think, of course we can. We do too much of comparing one place to another,. That was one of the tragic mistakes of the post two thousand and one period.

While the Taliban have the power of violence on their side in Afghanistan, they nonetheless need civilians to comply with their authority. Both strategically and by necessity, civilians have leveraged this reliance on their obedience in order to influence Taliban behaviour. In this week's episode Ashley Jackson author or Negotiating Survival speaks to Rosamund Urwin about her new model for understanding how civilian agency can shape the conduct of insurgencies.
