Finding the Last Enslaved African Americans
Karen Miller's cousin Dexter says he had no idea his ancestors were enslaved. He kept it to himself because he hadn't found any way to prove it. Carice Luck-Brimmer, a local historian and genealogist, helped Karen find the answer. She looked up David and Violet Miller in the 1870 census. The first one after the Civil War where they finally appeared by name. It showed they were farm hands that they couldn't read or write. Their children including as Carice showed us a very young Sarah Miller.
