Scotty seems uninterested in his childhood. He's marking time, waiting for these years to pass if possible without his participation. Evelyn knows not to greet him enthusiastically or use those endearments which adults so often bestow on children they barely know. Something about Scotty doesn't invite intimacy. Better for her to behave as if he were a worker clocking in for his shift.
