The History of Universities
In the early days of universities from the 1200s and so on, it was much more of a kind of professional education. The concept of research being rolled into that is somewhat more recent phenomenon. But in any case, the whole idea that universities would be these places where research as well as sort of broadcast education happened are very much like traditional apprentice system.
