We've only located forty per cent of asteroids that pose a threat. To divert an asteroid you need to know where it is, the biggest ones. A 150 meter wide space rock about 500 feet could obliterate a whole city. The chances of that kind of thing happening are tiny. Much more likely we would have decades warning that a large asteroid was heading our way.
