Otis had developed what became known as the safety elevator. Rather than rising up on straight metal beams, Otis had developed sawtooth beams. If the rope broke, it would trigger a spring in the elevator that would snap open and wedge itself into the beam. It was a great idea and Otis elevators would go on to be the name in elevators.
