The Origins of George Smith's Excavation in Mosul
In 1872, George Smith found a passage on a tablet that was partially encrusted over with calcium deposits. He wondered if it might somehow relate to the story of the great flood in the Book of Genesis. So he called in another untrained craftsman named Robert Reedy who had developed a secret method for chemically removing these calcium deposits. And so they uncovered the rest of this tablet, which was not entirely complete but was mostly intact. It made further mention of the boat coming to rest on top of a mountain and of a bird being sent out to look for land.
