The Importance of Prediction in Science

An extreme form of instrumentalism called logical positivism holds that all statements other than those describing or predicting observations are not only superfluous, but meaningless. The scientific method involves postulating a new theory to explain some class of phenomena and then performing a crucial experimental test. One then rejects the theory whose predictions turn out to be false. This is the source of the misconception that there is nothing more to a scientific theory than its predictions.
