Introduction

In this chapter, a lecturer in religious studies at Lancaster University discusses the Upanishads, their composition, and their relationship to the earlier Vedic texts. They explore the heterogeneous nature of the Upanishads and how they critique certain aspects of the Vedas while claiming authoritative status for themselves.
