The XYZ Affair

Marshall Marshall was one of the three American diplomats in the famous XYZ affair along with Elbridge Gary and Charles Coteworth Pinkney. John Adams was president when he sent this trio to France to try to work out disputes. They were never officially received by the French directory, which was the governing body at the time. When news of all of these happenings finally made it back to Philadelphia, there was a huge uproar.
