Was There a Shift in Hope in the Enlightenment?

Every year there's about a thousand and one end of the world or zombie apocalypse movies. This idea of apocalypticism is actually somewhat fascinating to me in terms of media, and in terms of cinematic or literary media as well. I think my sense of this literature or these films is that they're not presenting a beautiful ending at all. They're often films in which we confront some of our most abject fears about what the future could look like. It's just the apocalypse for its own sake. And there isn't always an underpinning of hope."
