Light from different stars takes time to travel from wherever the star is to where we are. Depending on how far the star is, the light from it might not have reached us yet. And so the space in the interim, for which the light hasn't gotten here yet, will be dark. If our eyes would be good enough, we would be able to see a totally lit up universe at night. But ere the brightness disspates em over long distances in a sphere, so we are not getting a lot of potons.
